HeadScrew

HeadScrew is a simple location logger with navigation feature. It is a completely free app with no subscriptions or one-time purchases. As with all of our apps, it was designed with a focus on preserving your privacy. All of your location information is stored in a database on your own device, and is never transferred off of your device and stored on a server*.

There are many possible ways HeadScrew can be used, but obvious examples are hiking expeditions and for locating where you parked at busy locations, such as airports. Other creative and fun possibilities also exist. The animated compass makes it perfect for fun events such as treasure hunts!

Features

HeadScrew has a very simple interface that is easy to use. When you first open the app, you will see a list of places you have saved.

Each place may involve several different locations (GPS coordinates). As an example, when on a hike, you will likely want to set a location at the trailhead as well as several waypoints along the trail.

Simply click the "+" button to create a new location, or list of locations. Each place can be assigned a name that is meaningful to you.

HeadScrew has support for Spanish language users!

New places can quickly and easily be added. In addition to assigning names to places you have saved, a brief description can optionally be added.

Each location in the list can be tagged with an additional comment or "memo" (also optional).

New features have been added for version 4.0.0, including the ability to edit or remove individual waypoints.

A new toolbar at the bottom can be scrolled to the left or right to reveal additional new features. One new feature is the ability to select a waypoint from within a group to immediately begin travel, rather than starting with the first or last waypoint. Users can also now share the latitude and longitude of a single waypoint or groups of waypoints with others.

When the time comes to recall a saved place, HeadScrew provides a useful feature providing navigation of the locations in reverse order. This can be used, as an example, during out-and-back hikes, where you need the ability to retrace your steps.

During travel, the user is presented with an animated compass and readout providing distance and direction to current location as well as your current heading. If there are multiple locations saved, then travel information to the next location will automatically appear upon arriving at the current destination.

Since your information is stored on-board, no network connections are required. The app can be used in remote wilderness locations just as well as populated areas!

HeadScrew was developed to use the built-in magnetometer in order to determine the user's current heading (direction of travel). However, not all phones are equipped with magnetometers. For those without, HeadScrew will derive your heading based on multiple GPS readings. In such scenarios, the heading information is only useful while the user is actually moving.
